1992 Coaching Club American Oaks

Turnback The Alarm made it two in a row at Belmont Saturday, scoring a convincing 1 1/4-length win over Easy Now in the $250,000 Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks. The victory, on the heels of a two-length score in the Mother Goose, boosted the Darn That Alarm filly into the top ranks of the nation's 3- year-old distaffers. Last year's 2-year-old filly champion, Pleasant Stage, was third in the six-horse field. Turnback The Alarm earned $150,000 and boosted her bankroll over the $500,000 mark. She ran the mile and one-quarter under Chris Antley in a relatively slow 2:03 2/5 over a fast track. Turnback The Alarm paid $4.80, $2.60 and $2.20. Easy Now, a half- sister to Easy Goer, paid $3.60 and $2.40. Pleasant Stage returned $2. 60. A $2 exacta ticket was worth $13. Local favorite Perfect Gem took the early lead. She surrendered the pace to Easy Now, with Mike Smith aboard, after six furlongs. After a mile, Turnback The Alarm took over and had too much for Easy Now to keep up. Winning trainer William Terrill said the race went just according to plan. 'When Easy Now moved, he (Antley) wanted to stay with her,' Terrill said. 'We thought EAsy Now was the horse to beat. She just can't beat our filly.' Antley said he was happy to stay behind a slow pace early but with five furlongs to go, 'I put my hands down and let her out a notch. I didn't want to go too slow.'
